When this occurs are you:-
1.Using a home network?
2.Using a Hotspot?
If at home are you in the same room as your wireless router/AP or in another room? The construction of the walls can attenuate the signal by quite a large amount and in order to keep your wireless link activate your Data Rate will be reduced to a suitable level.
The more people using the AP at the same time will also reduce the Data Rate as will anyone using an 802.11b device on a mixed b/g network.
Interference from other 2.4GHz wireless devices can also cause a reduction.
If you are using a Hotspot you will find similar rules apply and the further you are from the Hotspot will also cause a reduction in Data rate.
